Safety tools are becoming a normal part of more and more tabletop games, and the most well-known is the X-Card, by John Stavropoulos (https://ttrpg.pro/X-Card). It works great for most tables.
But the original lacks anonymity; everyone knows who played the X-Card and why. While this often isn't a problem, for some who feel uncomfortable raising an objection, it can be, and we want everyone at the table to feel safe and secure.
Some online virtual tabletops (VTTs), like Roll20 and Foundry have good solutions for this problem, and have annonymous X-Card solutions available. Others don't. But with Discord a near-universal platform for voice and video for online TTRPGs, we crafted a solution; Sanctuary.
It'a a completely annoymous X-Card bot that can be installed in any Discord server, and requires minimal permissions. Setup is quick and simple, and any player at a table can quickly anonymously raise an X-Card. All other players and the DM are notified the card was raised, but not who raised it. Once the situation is resolved, only the player who raised the X-Card can raise an O-Card to signal they're ready to proceed.
In the game's Discord channel, run /setup to start casting.
Confirm it is the correct channel, then give your game a name.
If you are the DM, confirm so. If you are an admin setting the game up for someone else, designate the server member who will be DM for the game.
If there is a shared role used by the players of the same―AND nobody else who can see the channel, select "They share a role", otherwise, you'll have to add them individually.
Sealect the shared role or players. This is who the bot will ping (aside from the DM) when an X-Card is raised, so be careful.
That's it! Your game is now warded!
If you need a fresh X-Card post, /x-card post will do so.
To raise an X-Card, a player (or the DM) can click the "Raise the X-Card" button on the post, or use the /x-card slash command; please note that using the slash command is slightly less annonymous, as Discord may display a "<user> is typing..." message as they do so.
Once the X-Card is raised, all players will be notified, with a post that allows only the DM to resume play.
Separately, the player who raised the X-Card will see an ephemeral message that only appears for them, with an "I'm ready to continue" button.
When they click it, it will send the DM a private message letting them know that whoever raised the X-Card is ready to continue.
When the DM is ready, they can then hit the "Resume play" button, which will raise the O-Card.
More than one player can raise an X-card, and each will to signal readiness to continue
If the DM clicks the "Resume play" button without an all-clear from all players who raised the card, Sanctuary will warn them that one or more players have not signaled the all clear, but will allow them to proceed if they confirm.
Currently Sanctuary is in testing and available by invite only.
We hope to roll it out widely in the coming months.
